Spotlight Friday: Butterflies

I love watching Butterflies doing their little dance around my flowers and enjoying the sun while taking a little rest or sipping on the nectar. Set off to  test another flower. Spread their wings to reflect the sun. Close them up to pretend they are just a boring one colored butterfly, just to shortly after give you a glimpse of their color explosion on their wings.

I tried to take pictures of them for many years. I only have a few pictures that are clear.

Last year when I was pulling weeds in my veggie garden I had a bunch of these guys nibbling on my just getting bigger veggie plants.

It was not only one or two….it was quite an army destroying my precious young plants. I picked one off and flicked it away.

Then I thought…hold, this does not look like a pest. Let me google what those guys are.

Well I found out they where Monarch caterpillars and that they needed saving not destroying.

So, I let the rest of them feast on my veggies.

This years I stumbled over a FB page that had a little “contest” going on. Send in a picture of you showing the  sign language for “butterfly” Then in return you would get a pack of seeds for  Milkweed, which is the food source of the Monarchs.  And some fun stuff and information to follow your butterfly population in your yard.

monarch

So just the other week we got our package with the seeds and all the good information about the Monarch Butterfly.

After two weeks of constant rain, we finally had the chance to get our seeds in the ground. Now it is a waiting game, hoping those seeds will take and we will get some nice Milkweed plants. And at some point hoping for a lot of happy Butterflies in our backyard.

Here is a little bit of info about, why Milkweed and what you can do to safe the Monarch Butterfly, just click on the picture and it will take you to the page. (http://www.saveourmonarchs.org/the-monarch-story.html)

I think Butterflies are beautiful, stunning creations. So delicate but so influential.

I remember while living in PNG we went to a small Zoo and there was a house with a room full of Insect collections. It made me cringe when I saw all those beautiful big butterflies pinned and kept in a box. And those where no little butterflies.

But so beautiful, so sad that we as humans are destroying their environment.

So I am happy that my kiddo and I took another step to make sure we will have a safe place for those wonderful creatures. So they will know they can find food and a place to rest.

Now let’s go hunting for butterflies on www.zibbet.com!

Spotlight Friday: natural cleaning supplies

Growing up in Papua New Guinea, I have learned to appreciate a few things. One of them is electricity when ever you want it and running water.

My Dad is a Lutheran Pastor, and it was his dream to be a Missionary in Africa. Sadly there was no position open there. The next open position was in PNG. I was 7 years old when we packed up all our things, most of them ended up in storage because we could only take necessities. Like tools, clothing anything that would work without electricity. It was all packed up in barrels. Our stuff when on the boat, we took the plane.

I was dropped of in Boarding School, a place called Katherine -Lehmann -School in Wau.  My parents and two siblings went on their new home. It was a 3 hour drive from Mt. Hagen towards the West. Basically in the middle of nowhere.

I came home I think 3 -4 times a year, to visit my parents during School breaks. There I learned that I had it quite good in Wau with running water and electricity.

My parents had a generator on their little farm, that would be started at 6 pm and  turned off at 10 pm every day.

Taking a shower was a new experience.

Our shower looked like this one   You had to heat up some water first, mix it with some cold water, pour it in the bucket. Pull the bucket back up and get ready. You only have a short time.

This is where I learned that we need to conserve our planet, that we should not be wasteful with our resources. Yes, I am one of those people. I get upset when hubby lets the water run to long, when the light is on in a room and nobody in it. One of those who closes all the doors, opens the windows etc.

Yes I am one of those people that does not put any poison on my plants, I want to eat them, not poison myself. I enjoy watching the natural bug control we have outside. Inside usually a shoe will do.

When I was back in Germany I learned that my skin reacts unpleasantly to all those additives, chemicals and sorts of nonsense that you can find in your lotions, soaps and shampoos.

So for me the natural thing to do was, make my own, ditch what I don’t need. My hair has not seen a shampoo in over 15 years.A quick rinse is just fine. Soaps I by online or at our market, made from goat milk or other yummy ingredients.

When my youngest was born I learned very quickly that she had the same skin issues, a little worse than I have. She even reacted to the laundry soap. And I never bought the ones that smelt strong. So next thing for me…..make your own.

so this week I want to share with you all those wonderful people that create cleaning and washing items:

Spotlight Friday: path, intuition, balance

The other day I had a “mini reading” from https://www.facebook.com/ZoesZenGarden?fref=nf

she does a reading with one card periodically or you can get your own full card reading. I love those mini readings, so far they have supported me in my decisions that I have been making and sometimes felt a little insecure if I was on the right path .

This week I got the card of “Goddess of Air” and it said :

[Goddess of Air] A balancing of past karma is coming. You are advised to prepare yourself to sweep out the old patterns and accept the new ones. This is a time of growth, and if you are willing to transform, you could find yourself on a new path.

“wow” was my first comment when I read it. Just what I was working on lately. I felt stuck, they way I had been doing stuff, the way I was tackling things.  I am still not quite sure how this is going to  change, but I am sure that if I keep an open mind, then I will find the new path, or that new path will find me.

Change is never easy. I will have to take it step by step and see where this new path will lead me.

Lately I have been feeling lost, stuck, indecisive. I had little hints and help here and there from friends, strangers and family. But I still didn’t feel quite ready yet, my eyes have not been quite open. So this for me is like a “wink mit dem Zaunpahl” , like a “Hint of the fate”

I am a very intuitive person. I listen very much to my inner “little” voice. When something doesn’t feel right, I will not do it. Even if there is no right explanation for it.  Decisions in my  life are seldom founded on rational thinking, yes the money things are, but anything to do with life are hugely influenced by emotions.

Of course this card got me thinking now. What old patterns should I sweep out and welcome the new?

So I went and searched for  “balancing Karma”. I believe that I have to humble myself a little more, let go of things, that I think I need to control. Trust myself and my family and friends. Don’t worry so much about the if, whens and whys. Just let it be. Not an easy task for me. Also in the same swing, I need to let go for myself too, be in the moment more, enjoy more of those little things. That cup of tea in the morning, without checking my mails. Watch those bees as they are humming around the flowers. Stop and watch my kids play games together, the close will be just fine laying there a little longer. Sometimes I am my worst enemy, putting too much pressure on myself. “What will the friends and neighbors think of me, when they come over unexpected?”

Right now I know I have a inside quarrel, I know this, because I can’t even sit down and enjoy my craft. I am restless. I want to sit down somewhere with a box of colors and color a Mandala . That has always calmed me and let me focus. Right now we have Spring break and our yearly BBQ right around the corner. So not really the time to find a quiet moment to crawl into myself and just be with me.

So while I am typing this, I popped on my old headphones and turned on my “vintage” CD player, to shut everyone out. So I can be in my thoughts and sort things out.  Listening to “Boys II Men”

I have found a few things on Zibbet that would fit for today’s Spotlight:

My wish is to find that balance for my life.  I realize it is not the goal that counts, but the path there. It is easier though  if you have a goal to work towards, a picture you can have for your inner eye.

I know that I am total out of balance at the moment. I believe acknowledgement is the first step. Now it is on me to keep the momentum going and welcome the change.

I wish you a meaningful day!

Spotlight Friday: friendship

I had a little bit of a heartache the other day. That questioned my level of friendships. I am not one that warms up quickly to people. But once I am in , I am all in and that means I will get hurt on a deeper level if something goes south. Some people call it “being to sensitive”, I call it “being totally invested or committed”

Wikipedia has this to say about friendship:

Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between two or more people.[1] Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. Friendship has been studied in academic fields such as sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, including social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles. A World Happiness Database study found that people with close friendships are happier.[2]

Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place, certain characteristics are present in many types of friendship. Such characteristics include affection, sympathy, empathy, honesty, altruism, mutual understanding and compassion, enjoyment of each other’s company, trust, and the ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend.

While there is no practical limit on what types of people can form a friendship, friends tend to share common backgrounds, occupations, or interests, and have similar demographics.

There it is this word: honesty

Honesty, for me is one of the main ingredients for a relationship to work. I give 100% honesty but also expect 100% honesty. Maybe I am wrong for that but in my opinion that is the only way relations are going to be fruitful and enjoyable.

Yes honesty is not always easy, sometimes it hurts. Sometimes it is very difficult to admit something to the other person. Sometimes it is hard to hear the truth. I believe only with knowing the truth we can make honest decisions, decisions that take us further not backwards.

So much precious time is wasted on lies and deceiving, so much energy used up for remembering who did I tell what.

Why is it that some people believe that the ” I ” is more important then the “we” ? Therefor they lie and hurt people just to get ahead, to be “better”.

I might not be a person with a big number of friends. But the ones I have I hold close to my heart. I have friends, that I have not seen in years, but I know we are still connected. We pick up the phone and it is just like we had seen each other yesterday.  With the friends I have, I made the experience that  what ever I tell them, it will stay with them. This is what is expected of me, so I will expect it from them. There is no need of adding the words “don’t tell anyone”.

Also do I know that when I have a opinion on something, I can share it with me friend, even though she might not see eye to eye with me on it. We accept each other the way we are. And if there is something said or done, or not done, and feelings get hurt we can and should be able to tell each other. Because I trust my friend that she did not do this on purpose. We apologize and move on.

I believe, my time here on earth is to short to waste it with dishonesty, trying to impress others just to get a so called better life, what others think of a better life.  I find myself in a spot at the moment where I am content, where I don’t have to pretend to be something that I am not. And that I have people in my life that take me as I am, with all my quirks and weirdness.

Yes, I have learned a valuable lesson this week.  Often it is not what it seems, I did get blindsided. I guess some people would say I am naive. I would call it ” I am to trustworthy and like searching for the the good in everyone”.  I did get burn, yes it hurt. It still stings a little. But I will move on. And I am sure the next time I will go in 100% again, because that is just who I am.

While I was searching “friendship” on Zibbet , I was thinking about my friendships I had in life so far, some still existing from when I was a little girl. Yes they have gone to sleep for a little while, but then all of a sudden blossomed. I believe a good solid friendship can help you get through though times as well as it can be the fireworks of your life at other times.

friendship

I hope everyone of you has  a dear friend in their life, that you know you can count on for the heavy  stuff but also for the silly things in life!!
