Spotlight Friday: bangles

Last week I had a little bit of PC hiccups, that is why there was no Spotlight. We are under a heatwave here since about 14 days. And my PC didn’t like it. So when it got to hot it just froze up. It was taking me forever to click on something. So I decided to just skip last weeks Spotlight.

We are still sweating away here. If we have something to do outside of the house, it has to be done before 9 or 10 am otherwise it is just scorching. Even the pool is too hot to jump in. So we close all our blinds and turn on all the fans in the house we can find and keep ourselves busy with crafts, books and movies or having friends over and play some board games. Right now Monopoly is the hit.

One of the crafts we tried out this week was making bangles from plastic bottles.  Our first hurdle was to find some plastic bottles in this house. It so just happened that the ACV (Apple cider vinegar) bottle was close to empty. So we used it, it wasn’t all flat like you see in this video.

But we didn’t let it stop us, just extra pattern for our bracelet. So I cut out 4 bangles out of one bottle. I made on for my friend. Sorry, didn’t get the chance to make any pictures.

What kind of crafts do you do when you are trying to escape the heat?

Let’s have a look at the bangles from Zibbet:

Spotlight Friday: Memories

1987 my family and I headed out on our bikes. The goal was to reach Vienna, traveling along the Donau (Danube). If you click on the “traveling along the Donau” you can see some pictures.

It was nice to paddle along the river and not have to pay attention to any cars, it was a path just for bike rider. The first part was not too much fun because we had to get to Passau from Regen, which was quite steep at times. We made it and could then enjoy the shade from the trees along the way. After all it was August, and warm.

I don’t remember how many stops we had already made, spending the nights in small Guesthouses along the way. I just know it was a bit after the town Linz, where I lost my memory.

In 1987, there was no law that you needed to wear helmets while riding your bike, well we didn’t have any. I don’t even think there where many cycle helmets around at that time. I think the first laws about wearing a helmet on the bike was in the early 90′.

My little sister, at that time she was 10, and I got in a word fight about something. Being a teenager I just turned my Walkman on and took off. We knew which trail to follow and where our next stop was. That is the last thing I remember.

The next thing I have a short glimpse of memory is in the ER, telling my Mom not to throw away my Adidas High tops (they had signatures from all the kids that I went on a Youth camp in Finland) Of course she discharged them, what I found out later.

Then I came back to myself a few days later in a pink ICU. I must of looked a little puzzled when the nurse walked in and gave me this radlunfall  Wow, I have had a bike accident. I must of got to far left on a road and hit another bike rider, 18 years young. I saw a picture of his bike later, it was totaled. My bike didn’t even have a scratch. It says in the article that we both ended up in the Hospital, but the guy got away with a few bumps and bruises.

Since then my memory is a bit shotty and I need help in remembering things. Often when I talk with friends and family about something in the past I can’t recall it, only after telling certain details or showing pictures, then mostly those memories will come back, but never fully.

This is why you will always find a lot of scribbling in my calendar, little notes to help me not to forget. I do journal, so I don’t forget. Sometimes it is sad when my kids ask me….”do you remember, when we did…..” and I can’t remember.

One of my little handicaps I have learned to live with, and work my way around it. A lot of memorabilia, created by me in this house because of this reason.

So I set off to see on Zibbet, how other Artists would keep their memories.

So, now you know why I have trouble remembering things if I don’t write them down or make any other crutch for myself.

Have a wonderful day!!

Spotlight Friday: Fantasy

The other day, I was sitting in my bathroom and saw this stuck to the side of my bathtub.

bathI had posted the picture on my FB page and got some really good replies, you can look at them here.

It is wonderful how our fantasy works. How everyone can see the same picture but totally interpret it differently.

Studying Psychology turned me into a “I want to find out why” person. I blame it on  Sigmund Freud.  I like getting to the bottom of things.  So I find it fascinating what people see, even though everyone else is looking at the same picture, they see so many different things.

A similarly positive view of fantasy was taken by Sigmund Freud who considered fantasy (German: Phantasie) a defence mechanism. He considered that men and women “cannot subsist on the scanty satisfaction which they can extort from reality. ‘We simply cannot do without auxiliary constructions,’ as Theodor Fontane once said … [without] dwelling on imaginary wish fulfillments.”[6] As childhood adaptation to the reality principle developed, so too ‘one species of thought activity was split off; it was kept free from reality-testing and remained subordinated to the pleasure principle alone. This activity isfantasying…continued as day-dreaming.[7] He compared such phantasising to the way a ‘nature reserve preserves its original state where everything…including what is useless and even what is noxious, can grow and proliferate there as it pleases’.[8]

Daydreams for Freud were thus a valuable resource. “These day-dreams are cathected with a large amount of interest; they are carefully cherished by the subject and usually concealed with a great deal of sensitivity … such phantasies may be unconscious just as well as conscious.”[9] He considered “These phantasies include a great deal of the true constitutional essence of the subject’s personality” and that the energetic man “is one who succeeds by his efforts in turning his wishful phantasies into reality,” whereas the artist “can transform his phantasies into artistic creations instead of into symptoms … the doom of neurosis.”[10] (Wikipedia)

I think fantasy is a wonderful thing!

Here is what I saw in the picture, someone having fun dancing. It made me smile! Made me remember the small things in life!
