Spotlight Friday: Tea cup and mice

Yes, I did finish my kiddos Advent calendar. And it is already stuffed with little goodies, no sweets. She is into those “shopkins” things right now. They trade them in School like hot cakes. That was the easy part. To pick the right colors and the right stitch and which order took a little longer, because it was not my decision to make. This is what she wanted and got :

advent

Now I just have to find some more little items for my other kiddo to get that calendar completely done.

While I am sitting here thinking about what I could write about today. All I had on my mind was a cup of tea. So I guess I will go make me a good cup of tea right now, in my favorite mug. Well second favorite mug. The one I loved and had for over 17 years got dropped by my little one about a year ago when she was cleaning out the dishwasher.  It was one similar to this one,  Yes, I really like those Diddl mice. Don’t know if they still make them.

It was a gift from one of “my” girls from the foster home, where I worked at. I think my daughter knew that this cup was my favorite and  busted out in tears when she heard it hit the floor. Poor thing, nothing to worry about, it is just a cup.

It is funny how coffee or tea tastes better out of your favorite mug, or is it just my imagination?  I think for me it is the combination of the tea and the cup. Drinking tea calms me down, gets me ready for my day or end the day and reminds me of times sitting together with my Dad enjoying a cup.  And the cup, I have a few given to me from dear friends, takes me to the place where I met that specific person or when I was given the cup or memories like that.

Most of the times I drink tea, some times some cappuccino, I have to be careful with those because I am Lactose intolerant and have not so nice side effects.

Maybe that is why I started knitting mice?    I am not sure. I know, odd combination.   But for some reason it comforts me.miceBride

I did have a pair of Hamsters growing up, never mice.

So, while I am sipping on my tea, in my second favorite cup. I will search Zibbet and see what I can find with Tea cup and mice:

So do you think it is still a weird combination?  Do mice and cup of teas go together for you yet?  You see now, why they make total sense to me!  What is your combination that other people look at quirky?

Spotlight Friday: Advent

Yes, I do know, it is still only October. It got cold here in SC for a few days and that kind of put me in the mood to get my Advent and Christmas stuff going. I usually collect throughout the year, little things, to put into my kids Advent calendar. Stuff like, nail clippers, chap sticks, key chains etc. Little things that fit. And as well a few pieces of chocolate.

This year for some reason I was slacking. The last few years my youngest still got a Lego or Playmobile Calendar from her Opa in Germany. This year she decided she was too old for it. That put me in the pickle of “oh oh….I don’t have one made” and “I don’t have anything to put in”

I found some black and some blue felt in my fabric stack and figured I will sew 24 stockings and hang them on a garland. Something like this.                                              So I need to get cracking and cut those out and start sewing, because I only have a little over 4 weeks to get it done.

I love the Advent time, I am a real sucker for everything that makes the house feel comfy and warm. Little incense smoker men in all shapes and sizes. The Advent wreath, with for candles for every Sunday. The nuts, the Lebkuchen (ginger bread)   Friends of ours in Germany send as a care package every year, so we can enjoy the German Gingerbread. I love them so much for doing this. And don’ get me started on the Marzipan, a must have for the Advent time.         I think I have spoiled my kid on all those German goodies, because they don’t want anything else during this time. This year our Ginger bread package came early. I tried to hide them in the freezer so we would have them for the Christmas time. But guess what!!! They already found them and dug into them, little buggers, even the hubby couldn’t keep his fingers off. Luckily we have a Aldi in town and they do carry German Ginger bread, even though it’s not the one from Nuremberg.

So now I am on the hunt to get everything, and have all things ready before the first Advent, which falls on November 29th this year.

When do you start getting ready for the Advent and Christmas time, any specific tricks you could share to make it less stressful?

Spotlight Friday: South Carolina

Last week I sadly had no time to write a Spotlight, as you might know I live in South Carolina, and we where busy cleaning up from the mess that Mother Nature had put upon us.  I am finally catching up on laundry, after 13 days of constant rain. I don’t have a dryer and it was too humid to hang it up in the house. And the kids where out of School and wanted to be kept busy. We couldn’t drive anywhere, do to washed out roads. There where curfews in place that kept us grounded as well.

The October 2015 North American storm complex was a high precipitation event that caused historic flash flooding across North and South Carolina. The incipient cold front traversed the Eastern United States on September 29–30, producing heavy rain in multiple states. The system subsequently stalled just offshore. Tapping into moisture from the nearby Hurricane Joaquin, a developing surface low brought heavy, continuous rain to southeastern States, with the worst effects concentrated in South Carolina where catastrophic flooding is ongoing. The event culminated in South Carolina on October 4 when numerous rivers burst their banks, washing away roads, bridges, vehicles, and homes. Hundreds of people required rescue and the state’s emergency management department urged everyone in the state to not travel.[4] Some areas of the state have seen rainfall equivalent to a 1-in-1000-year event.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_2015_North_American_storm_complex)

A video, with a little bit of humor, that is much needed here at the moment.

It seemed like the rain will never stop. We had a few days with out rain and then on the weekend it came down pouring again, so we had more roads washed out, more dams breached. The kids where out of School for a whole week. The buses could not pick up the kids and bring them safely to School. It was amazing to see how the South Carolinians pull together, strap on their boots and help each other out in tough times.Sport teams helped clean out flooded houses, gathered at collection points to help load up all those donations. Churches where overrun with clothes, water and food donations to help those who had lost everything.  Of course this will not be over any time soon. It will take a long time to rebuild, to get back to a little bit of normal. This Monday most of the Schools in Lexington reopened again, a little delayed, but open. Every morning at drop off I see kids lugging big bags of donations in to the School

Spotlight Friday: warm Fall colors

As we are preparing for a nasty wet weekend, I am longing for warmer dryer days and a little bit more color. The last few days have been dreary and mood killing. Just wet and so dark.

And now we are expecting up to 17″ inches of extra water on top of what we already had.

I remember those days in Germany when the leaves where turning and I’d walk in the park with those huge chestnut trees with the big leaves and beautiful colors.

The smell of roasted chestnuts. I always stopped to get me a bag full. I love the taste.  If you find some,  I would recommend to try this:

Make a large X in each chestnut with chestnut knife or a sharp paring knife, cutting through shell. Toss chestnuts with oil in a bowl.

Heat dry skillet over moderately low heat until hot, then roast chestnuts in skillet on stovetop, covered, stirring every few minutes, for 15 minutes total.

Add water and continue to roast, covered, stirring occasionally, until water is evaporated and chestnuts are tender, about 5 minutes more. Serve hot.

So delicious!!!

When I was little we used to collect the chestnuts and at home do crafts with them.  Something like this, with toothpicks and matches. Ours never turned out that fancy.

I loved the smell running through the piles of leaves and the wonderful Fall air. It is like the Nature is giving us a firework of colors before it takes its rest over the Winter. So many reds, browns and yellows. Try to soak it all in, so it will get you through the cold dreary months.
