it would help to know my Physics….

So the last thing you saw was this

ham4

I think by now it’s safe to say that this will be a wreath with two trees, some sky and grass.

I then made a hammock, that I attached to the tree trunks. And went on to making the mouse and the accessories. I had to wait for the feedback from my kiddo on the teachers eyes. I like making my mice personal.

ham7

The hammock looked pretty comfy to me. I am one to spend a lot of time in my own hammock, enjoying the sounds of nature, soaking up the sun or reading a good book. Or sometimes just taking a nap.

What I didn’t take in account that the mouse would not have the same weight distribution as I did.

After I had finished up the mouse I sewed it to the hammock and picked the wreath up on it’s hanger.

Guess what???

Yes, the mouse did a flip and was hanging belly down!!! Sorry, I have no picture of that. I was just too frustrated with myself. Why didn’t it dawn on me, that the lightweight hammock would not hold the “heavy” mouse.

I had to ponder on that for a little and tried a few options.

I finally managed to find one that wouldn’t look too funny and awkward.

This morning I printed out some book covers and cut out little book pages and sewed the books together. I then glued them to the wreath.Hammock5

Attached my little tag and wrapped it up. Sat the kiddo down to write a little note for the teacher as soon we got back from School.

I hope the teacher gets to enjoy her Summer Break with some good books in a hammock.

Spotlight Friday: cooling down

This Summer so far has been rather on the hot side. Temperatures hovering around the 100 F. So warm and muggy that you try to get everything done in the few morning hours before the thermostat hits those unbearable numbers again.

You say I should be used to this?  Yes we lived in El Centro CA, where the average in the Summer is between 105 and 113 F. And yes it was unbearable to go outside there very often. The daily  trip to the mail box I  delayed until the sun went down. I was pregnant during the time we lived there and many times I had my feet stuck in a bucket full of cold water and ice. The pool was not an option because it was like a warm bath tub. Our AC ran all day and broke down often.

Now living in South Carolina we got used to the wonderful three sometimes 4 Seasons again and we love it.

I bake all our own bread. With these temperatures it has been proven to be a challenge. I do not want to add anymore heat to our house, it is warm enough in here already. This summer we have our AC set to 83 F, so it would not be running all day. Every corner houses a fan. Occasionally you will see a cat or a person standing or sitting in front of one of those to cool off.

So now we are running low on bread and I am hoping for a cooler morning. Does not look very promising, at least not in the next few days.

What to eat in this heat? During the day we stick with fruits and nuts. Cooling drinks or home made ice cream.

How do you stay cool in this scorching weather?

Spotlight Friday : I ♥ books

I love a good book. For me a good book means I can start reading and forget everything around me. Live the story I am reading at the moment.

I remember reading “the never ending story” at the beach of Corsica, I think I was 16 years old. Laying at the beach. I could not put this book away. Hours upon hours I was reading. We where on a Pastors + Family retreat. So there where a few other kids and teenagers that we knew and hung out with. While I had made sure everyone was covered with sun lotion first.

Corsica I kind of forgot myself and payed the price in the evening. I was so burnt at the end of the day that I couldn’t even bend my knees or sit properly on my chair. I still have this book. I remember opening it the first time. The story was written in two different colors and the pictures would pull you in.

A few years ago when my Grandma passed away. My Dad started sending me all her books.  I love him for that. He knows I need to feed my hunger for books, my hunger for imagination that comes with the written word. And reading in my Mother language has a little bit more magic for me, then reading it in English. Don’t get me wrong, I like reading a good book either way. It just tends to be a little easier in German plus it sets of a bit more imagination.

At the moment I have a little bit more of, what I call “heavier” literature on my bedside table. It is more informational stuff. Things that I want to learn, help me get better. A friend just send me a book the other week. It is called “Darm mit Charme

You can find a little info on that right here (I am pretty sure there will be an English version soon)

Also I have a lot of Sarah Ballantyne’s books at the moment, that I am working through, due to my health issues that I was facing last year.

I can’t wait for the time my kids are out of School and I can get back to more reading again, where there are no fixed schedules no appointments we have to be at. I enjoy reading with my kids next to me with their noses stuck in a book too.  Here and there hearing a chuckle or a deep gasp. Knowing they are living the story they are just reading.

I tried reading on a tablet, but that is no fun for me. I need to turn the pages, be able to jump back a few pages to reread something real quick. I just don’t get the same excitement out of an electronic device.

Now off to Zibbet, let’s see what kind of magic happens when I type in “books” in the search:

      So what is your favorite book?

i-books

I love the Summer time, that means for us a weekly visit at the Library. Learning what my kids are interested in reading right now and hearing from them what they thought about the book they just read.

What are you reading at the moment?

Book Lover

I keep collecting books I know
I’ll never, never read;
My wife and daughter tell me so,
And yet I never head.
“Please make me,” says some wistful tome,
“A wee bit of yourself.”
And so I take my treasure home,
And tuck it in a shelf.

And now my very shelves complain;
They jam and over-spill.
They say: “Why don’t you ease our strain?”
“some day,” I say, “I will.”
So book by book they plead and sigh;
I pick and dip and scan;
Then put them back, distrest that I
Am such a busy man.

Now, there’s my Boswell and my Sterne,
my Gibbon and Defoe;
To savour Swift I’ll never learn,
Montaigne I may not know.
On Bacon I will never sup,
For Shakespeare I’ve no time;
Because I’m busy making up
These jingly bits of rhyme.

Chekov is caviare to me,
While Stendhal makes me snore;
Poor Proust is not my cup of tea,
And Balzac is a bore.
I have their books, I love their names,
And yet alas! they head,
With Lawrence, Joyce and Henry James,
My Roster of Unread.

I think it would be very well
If I commit a crime,
And get put in a prison cell
And not allowed to rhyme;
Yet given all these worthy books
According to my need,
I now caress with loving looks,
But never, never read.

Spotlight Friday: relax, peace, tranquility

This week I don’t know if I am coming or going. I will be relieved when calmer days arrive.

It actually started last week. Hubby had to take a pneumonia shot, his workplace requires that. The next day he was sick, with chills and an angry tummy. I love my Hubby, but him being sick is a challenge for me. So when I saw this picture on my timeline on FB, I thought “oh, thank you, for whom ever posted it, but that is just what I needed”  It made me smile and it

marriagewas easier to carry on.  Hubby was in quite a grouchy place until Friday. He did go back to work on the weekend. After work the kids and my hubby decided to play football in the yard. Back came a bruised middle finger on my oldest and a bruised foot on my hubby. What where they doing ? Packed ice on everyone and listened to their”ouch, ouch” all evening. Come Sunday, I had two kids sitting on the couch complaining about sore throats. So far I never had them home sick at the same time. But Monday morning, both of them with fever and nearly no voice. The oldest recovered pretty quick and was back in the saddle on Tuesday, the other one finally went back to School on Thursday. In between, hubby stayed home for two days because his foot had swell up so bad that he couldn’t stand anymore.

Take a deep breath I was thinking, you can get through this, you only need to finish one custom order of socks and one of a bride mouse. In my head it was screaming “when will you have time to finish this?”

I did manage to find some time in the evening, while sitting next to my feverish kiddo.

Bride Downloads3So everyone is back to work and School, so I can get back to my business.  So I thought!

On Wednesday, I kept smelling electrical fire, but I couldn’t locate it. I thought it was the hood over the stove. I had hubby take it down, but nothing seemed to be wrong. So I went to bed. During the early morning hours, hubby made himself some breakfast ( I know weird, but because of his weird shifts he is up at the oddest hours), I think he fried some meat. When the kids and I got up around 6:30 am, and wanted some eggs for breakfast nothing was working anymore. All 4 knobs where turned up to high and nothing. Oh boy, I guess we need a new stove.  So we went out after I dropped one kids off in School, other one hasn’t been fever free for 24 h, for to be returning to School, and bought a new stove. “it will be delivered Monday” ….aehm…no we need it today, we can’t do 6 days without a warm meal. We will pick it up in the afternoon.

That we did, hooked it up, cooked 1/2 of a dinner on it before it decided to entertain us with a big boom and a spark. I ran outside to see if the breaker was on off. No, stuck somewhere in the middle. Unplug everything and start searching the internet an electrician.

Asking around on FB, calling friends, but came up empty. The guys that I had found online so far all couldn’t come before Friday. By Wednesday night 11 pm, I was exhausted and to uneasy to go to sleep. I shut the laptop and said to myself ‘ you need to get some sleep”. I tried, but I was tossing and turning, every time I woke up I was sniffing to find out if there was any smoke.

After School drop of, and unhappy kids because they had to eat cereal, I went back to calling electricians. I finally found one that said: I will be out in about 1 – 11/2 and look at it. Yes please!!

He was here, we explained what was going on and he looked at the socket that had made itself known with such a loud noise the night before.

He unscrewed the thing and said “oh, wow”. Well that didn’t sound good to me. And he then showed me this

socket

That didn’t look good. So my next question was: “how longs has this been going on?”  him:”for a long time” me: “what do you understand under a long time, weeks, months?” “no” he said “years, probably since they built the house, who ever was responsible for this socket never tightened the wires properly.”

We where living on a ticking time bomb.  But it is fixed now, our new stove didn’t take any damage of it, and we will have a warm dinner tonight.

I really think, I had enough excitement and stress the past few days. I could do with out it for a while. Spring break is still a bit over a week away. So I will try to sooth my self in some tranquility, peace and relaxation that I can find online.

Spotlight Friday: essential oils

I hope all my American readers had a wonderful 4th of July. I sure did, hanging out with my friends family in North Carolina. That is why there was no Spotlight last week.

This week I would like to see what I can find about Essential oils on www.zibbet.com

I have always used Essential oils, either by diffusing them or for cleaning. Also for massaging them into your skin. Or in my daily teeth cleaning and oil pulling.

I have quite a few books in German, also follow some pages on the internet for information. But I will be going to a Class in a few days to learn more about it.

The way to use the oils is called Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person’s mind, moodcognitive function or health.

Some essential oils such as tea tree[1] have demonstrated anti-microbial effects, but there is still a lack of clinical evidence demonstrating efficacy against bacterial, fungal, or viral infections. Evidence for the efficacy of aromatherapy in treating medical conditions remains poor, with a particular lack of studies employing rigorous methodology,[2] but some evidence exists that essential oils may have therapeutic potential.[3]                                           (source Wikipedia)

When we first got the the US, there was not much Literature to be found either on the net or elsewhere. But now it seems you can find information everywhere. Also I find it easier to buy oils now then a few years ago.  So I am looking forward to refresh my knowledge and learn some new things in that upcoming class.

Spotlight Friday: relaxing

The last few days before Christmas Eve always get a little hectic. I can’t wait till it’s here and then the time for relaxing has come.

How do you relax?

With a good book, drinking your favorite coffee or Tee wrapped up in a blanket and listening to your favorite Christmas music? Or maybe picking up an old or new craft?

For us this mostly means family time, playing board games, reading books, playing Wii…and a lot of other fun stuff.

so let’s see what we can find on www.zibbet.com to relax.

time to slow down

why you may ask? For me there are a few reasons.

♥ Tension in my shoulders, that tension is affecting my arms so I can’t knit as much and as fast as I would like

♥ days seem to fly by me without having time to stop and smell the roses

♥Advent time is right around the corner and I have nothing planned yet

♥my kids seem to grow up faster by the minute and I want to cherish every minute, yes also the bad ones.

♥ hubby, I only see him briefly, he’s working too much

♥ and many more little things I found I miss, like going on a walk with my one neighbour and having a cup of coffee with my other neighbour… etc.

SO IT IS TIME TO SLOW DOWN, at least for me!

After my appointment at the Occupational Therapy yesterday  it hit me, I really have to pull the breaks. I have to stop trying to do everything at once and getting it done in record time.

Maybe I should have listened to my Yoga DVD a little better. I tried out Yin Yoga. Not from this page though, this is just so you can check out what it is.

On this DVD she says, while you are in a pose and breathe ” to be in the presence” !  Duh!!!! I am always already on my next project, my next cleaning task, my next appointment, my next…. uh you get it.  I need to start living in the NOW and start to embrace it. No wonder I can’t remember the little things, I don’t take time for them to be noticed and saved.

Ok, so my change from the regular Yoga to this yin yoga was my first step.

The next step was initiated from my daughter, being a pre teen she is starting to feel the peer pressure and wanted some “talk time” with me. We do have quite a good communication going but it doesn’t hurt to get into it deeper. She saw that I had bought the book Queen bees and wannabes a while a go and she requested that we start reading it together.  Yes she picks the time when everyone is in bed and she knows it will buy her some time to get to bed later, but this is more important. So we cuddle up and start reading a chapter, with her interrupting me and telling me how she experiences all that stuff. I must say it is hard for me to put myself into her shoes because I never had to deal with stuff like that. So I am glad and thankful that she is willing to share and talk about her fears.

Now I need to find a way to slow down for myself and find the time and alow my head to shut off and read a good book. The books are here, waiting to be read. But I seem to not be able to stop and enjoy. Any help?

And for my hubby time….hm… will have to ask him, when he doesn’t immediately fall asleep when he comes back from work.
